Wife of Suspected Chinese Spy Denies Accusations, Says Husband Works for Driverless Car Company

  • Wife denies espionage accusations, claims husband works for a driverless car company.
  • Authorities allege surveillance activities near military installations.
  • Civic leaders urge caution and due diligence in the investigation.

Manila, Philippines - The wife of a Chinese man arrested on suspicion of espionage has vehemently denied the allegations, claiming her husband works for a company developing self-driving cars.

Yuanqing Deng, along with two Filipino drivers, was apprehended by authorities on January 17 following reports of alleged surveillance activities near vital military installations.

Noemi Deng, his wife, spoke out on Monday, stating that her husband's job involves road surveys for driverless car technology. "He surveys the roads for self-driving cars. He didn't elaborate on his exact tasks, but I understand they use technology like Waze to assess the roads," she explained.

Noemi expressed deep concern about the impact of these accusations on her family, particularly her eight-year-old son. "I'm afraid of how this will affect my son at school. He keeps asking for his father," she said, pleading for Deng's release.

Civic leader Teresita Ang See urged authorities to exercise due diligence before reaching conclusions, emphasizing that Deng is a contractor for a company working with clients from Australia, the US, and Taiwan.

Deng's legal counsel, Ferdinand Topacio, stated that a bail petition will be filed once the case reaches court.

The NBI investigation stemmed from an intelligence report that a group of Chinese nationals, under the guise of developing autonomous vehicles, were engaged in surveillance operations.

Deng and his drivers were arrested after allegedly failing to provide proper authorization for collecting information that could impact national security.

The case is currently under investigation, and authorities are gathering evidence to determine the true nature of Deng's activities in the Philippines.
