Iloilo City's newly inaugurated Sunset Boulevard, a promising public space, has been marred by a significant amount of trash left behind after the Dinagyang Festival celebrations.

Renowned photographer Steve Francis Quiatchon captured a photo at 7 AM on Saturday, revealing a concerning scene of litter scattered across the boulevard. Quiatchon's Facebook post, captioned "You would think this is somewhere in Manila, but you are wrong," quickly drew attention to the issue.
Just opened on January 24th, the boulevard quickly became a popular spot for Dinagyang revelers. However, the post-festival scene revealed a less celebratory side, with hundreds of attendees leaving behind a trail of waste, including liquor bottles, food wrappers, and other debris. The sheer volume of trash has sparked widespread concern and calls for stricter regulations to maintain the cleanliness and usability of the new public space.
In response to the situation, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas has taken swift action. He has directed the City Council to draft an ordinance that will outline specific guidelines and penalties for the proper use of the Sunset Boulevard. The proposed ordinance is expected to tackle key issues such as littering, the consumption of alcoholic beverages within the area, and the management of activities held on the boulevard.
This move aims to prevent future occurrences of such widespread littering and ensure that the Sunset Boulevard remains a clean and enjoyable space for all residents and visitors. The city hopes that the new regulations will foster a sense of responsibility and encourage proper waste disposal practices among those using the newly inaugurated space.
