Donaire wins WBC bantamweight title, knocks down Oubaali three times

The Filipino flash Nonito Donaire showed lots of power on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) as he was able to regain the WBC bantamweight championship after knocking out the undefeated Nordine Oubaali in Carson, California.

He made history to become the oldest bantamweight champion in the world at the age 38, as he stopped Oubaali in the fourth round.

The Filipino-American (41-6, 27 KO) felt Oubaali out for the first round, with Oubaali darting in and out, throwing some energy to see if he could dominate the action. But Donaire stayed composed, and showed his vintage performance to counter Oubaali. Then in the third, he gave Oubaali a flash with his counter left hook and put the Frenchman on the canvas for the first time.

Donaire finished Oubaali thrice, with the last knockdown coming in the fourth round prompting the referee to stop the fight.

“I believe that it matters not what your age is, it matters how you are mentally, how strong you are mentally,” Donaire said. “What I learned from (a 2019 loss to Naoya) Inoue is I’m back. I knew I could compete with him, and I was not fighting, I was learning. I’m ready for the next one!”

And yes, Donaire absolutely wants a rematch with Naoya Inoue.

“That’s what I wanted to win this fight, because that’s my next goal,” he said. “The only thing I haven’t done in boxing is become undisputed, and the next phase is getting the rematch.”
