A firm CY & Sons wants to bring Negros Occidental its first-ever tree-to-bar chocolate made with locally grown cacao.
According to general manager Ricardo Dominic Lopez, his mother Celina Yanson Lopez wants to put Negros' chocolate on the world map. Only most of the world's cocoa is produced in just two countries, the Ivory Coast and Ghana.
Negros has been dubbed as the sweetest place in the country due to its wide range sugarcane plantation. Now, Negros is adding another reputations as the second largest to produce chocolate bars next to Davao. Currently, CY & Sons Group has owned a 50-hectare plantation in Barangay Dos Hermanas, talisay City in Negros Occidental.
There are 35,000 Criollo variety cacao trees planted on 40 hectares land.
"My mother wanted a unique business to stand out from any other business and put Negros on the chocolate map," said Lopez.
"our long term plan is to penetrate the world chocolate market," he added.
The project will mean to encourage other farmers in Negros to grow the rare Criollo cacao variety to get enough supply to be used in the chocolate factory that is set to build in the next five years.
