The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has raised the alert level for Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island to 2 following a series of volcanic earthquakes.
PHIVOLCS chief Teresito Bacolcol warned that the volcano's activity could further escalate, potentially leading to another eruption. As a precaution, Bacolcol advised concerned residents and local governments to remain vigilant.
In its latest bulletin, PHIVOLCS reported 37 volcanic earthquakes recorded at Kanlaon Volcano within a 24-hour period, from midnight on Monday to midnight on Tuesday. Bacolcol explained that these earthquakes likely indicate the movement of magma beneath the volcano, which can fracture rocks and cause seismic activity.
On Tuesday, Kanlaon Volcano emitted a significant amount of sulfur dioxide—2,794 tons—and produced plumes reaching a height of 800 meters, drifting towards the northeast direction.
Alert Level 2 signifies increased unrest at Kanlaon Volcano. Under this alert level, entry into the four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and flying near the volcano are strictly prohibited. Sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions remain a possibility.
Kanlaon Volcano's last eruption occurred on June 3, lasting six minutes and producing plumes that rose to a height of 5,000 meters.
