Naga City, Philippines - A driver of a gray Fortuner SUV has faced widespread condemnation online after being caught tying a goat to the back of his vehicle and driving away. The incident, which occurred on October 8, was captured on video by a concerned motorist, Mary Ann Armillo Oira.
In her Facebook post, Oira described how she initially thought the driver was unaware of the goat being dragged behind his vehicle. However, she was shocked when she overtook him and saw him smirking. Despite numerous motorists honking at him and attempting to stop him, the driver continued driving.
Oira eventually managed to block the SUV and confront the driver, but he simply overtook her again. She recorded the incident to expose the driver's license plate number.
The video quickly went viral on social media, sparking outrage among Filipinos who condemned the driver's actions as "animal cruelty." The post has garnered over 1.9 million views, 2,700 comments, 2,800 shares, and 7,000 likes.
According to Oira, the incident took place near the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines in Naga City. She also mentioned that she and other motorists tried to alert the driver by honking at him, but he remained unmoved.
Many netizens expressed their anger and disgust at the driver's actions, calling for him to be held accountable. Animal welfare groups have also been tagged in the post to investigate the incident.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in the Philippines. In July 2024, a dog was spotted standing on top of a moving pickup truck bed cover in Davao del Oro. The incident drew condemnation from actress-influencer Heart Evangelista, an animal advocate.
The Animal Welfare Act in the Philippines prohibits animal abuse, maltreatment, and exploitation. Individuals who are found guilty of such acts can face imprisonment and/or fines.
