Wooden Wonder: Clark International Airport Named Best in the Philippines

Clark International Airport (CRK) has once again soared to new heights, claiming the title of International Airport of the Year – Philippines at the 2024 TDM Travel Trade Excellence Awards – Asia. This remarkable achievement comes as no surprise, given the airport’s innovative design and construction.

In collaboration with Hong Kong’s International Design Associates (IDA), Megawide pioneered the use of Glulam technology in the Philippines. This cutting-edge technique involves gluing layers of timber together to form strong, durable beams. The result is a stunning, eco-friendly structure that pays homage to the natural beauty of the Philippines.

The airport’s iconic, wave-like roof, inspired by the Zambales mountain range, is the largest single Glulam roof in the world. Crafted by Austrian timber engineering experts Rubner Holzbau, the intricate wooden trusses form the backbone of this architectural marvel. The roof is further complemented by a 47,800 sq.m aluminum alloy roofing imported from Italy.

BCDA President and CEO Vivencio Dizon expressed his pride in the airport, stating, “As the next premier gateway to Asia, Clark International Airport should be designed and constructed only by the best in the world.”

This recognition is further solidified by the World Architecture and Design Award or “Prix Versailles” bestowed by UNESCO, which acknowledges CRK as one of the most beautiful airports globally.
