Ex K-pop star Seungri sentenced to three years in prison

Former K-pop star Seungri was sentenced to 3-years in prison by a military court on Thursday, August 12. He was convicted with multiple charges such as arranging prostitution, overseas gambling, procuring prostitution, and other sexual charges.

The 30-year-old singer from popular boy band BigBang was found guilty on all nine counts against him, according to reports. He is also obliged to pay a fine of 1.15bn won (£6,82,259) for his involvement in the Burning Sun scandal in 2019, where a number of women alleged they were drugged at nightclubs and offered to wealthy businessmen to be raped.

He was one of the 350 people arrested during the operation in a club in Gangnam.

“The defendant [Seungri] arranged sexual favours for foreign investors on many occasions in collusion with his business partner Yoo In-suk and gained benefits as a result. His crime of commercialising sex and violating our traditional custom has caused no small harm to our society," the military court said as quoted by South Korean media Yonhap reports.

He announced his retirement from showbiz in March 2019 following his controversy.

Seungri, whose real name is Lee Seung-hyun debuted as a member of K-pop boy group BIGBANG in 2006.
