MUSA FABRIC GIVES HOPE TO WOMEN INMATES IN DAVAO AS BANANA FIBER LANDS NEW YORK FASHION WEEK

 The Davao del Norte banana fiber is now gaining international attention as it finally landed in the New York Fashion Week.



From clothes and bags to face masks, these creations were transformed out of banana fiber. The Philippines is the second largest exporter of bananas in the world. 






Joy Soo, the brain behind the brand Musa Fabric gives the rich banana industry of the province an innovative ideas that could create jobs aside from its agricultural worth.



Soo is a certified public accountant who retired early to pursue her fashion desire. And two years later the local brand has reached the international stage. 



According to the Musa Fashion founder, this product are came from the hard work and dedication of the people who are part of the journey especially the women inmates of Davao del Norte's provincial jail who wave diligently the banana fiber.




These women inmates are currently paid by DOLE but after she realized that the families of these inmates will benefit, she decided to doubled their salaries.

"Banana fiber is softer compared to other fibers used as cloth. It is not itchy to the skin," Soo said.



Through a collaboration with the Davao del Norte LGU and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and other government agency, Musa products have gotten the interest of buyers from other cities in the Visayas and Luzon.
