This first cancer-killing virus which was tested on animals have shown huge success at shrinking solid tumors.
Vaxinia has been genetically engineered to kill cancer cells which scientists hope the virus will amplify the body's immune response against cancer. In the previous animal trials, scientists revealed a very promising results.
The cancer-killing virus has shown that it can reduce the size of the lung, breast, ovarian, pancreatic, and colon cancer tumors.
In the recent trial, it found out that the virus performed not only cancer-killing but also had the ability to make it more recognizable to the body's immune system. Researchers also hope that this will help the body's response stronger, allowing it to fight back better.
Following to the successful result to animals, the scientists decided to test it into human.
Currently, Vaxinia will be tested in a Phase 1 trial of just 100 cancer patients with a metastatic or advanced solid tumor, who have already tried at least two other treatments.
Researchers have plan to administer the drug in two different groups, with the first receiving Vaxinia and other to receive the cancer-killing virus plus an immunotherapy drug.
