Twitter will be soon adding calls and encrypted messaging to the platform, Twitter Inc Chief Executive Elon Musk revealed on Tuesday.

Last year, he flagged plans for "Twitter 2.0 The Everything App," which Musk said would have features such as encrypted direct messages (DMs), long form tweets and payments.

"Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number," Musk said in a tweet on Tuesday.

The move will bring competition to rival Facebook and Instagram, which has the same features.

Encrypted direct messages is said to be available from Wednesday, May 10.

Twitter will also start clensing process by removing inactive old accounts.
