The Gilas Pilipinas men's national basketball team is set to embark on a crucial journey in their pursuit of a coveted spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics. From July 2-7, 2024, the team will battle it out in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, determined to secure their place in the prestigious global sporting event.
During the official tournament draw held last November 28, 2023, in Mies, Switzerland, Gilas was drawn into Group A alongside Latvia and Georgia. This presents a challenging yet exciting opportunity for the team to showcase their skills and resilience against formidable opponents.
The Philippines narrowly missed out on direct qualification for the Paris Olympics after falling short of securing the top spot among Asian teams at the FIBA World Cup. Japan emerged as the highest-ranked Asian team, but Gilas will have another chance to make their mark in the upcoming Olympic qualifiers.
A total of 23 other teams will join Gilas in the quest for Olympic glory. While Germany, Serbia, the United States, and Canada have already secured their spots in Paris, the remaining seven spots will be fiercely contested among the remaining contenders.
France, as one of the host nations, along with Australia and South Sudan, have also been granted direct qualification.
With only seven months left before the qualifiers, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and the rest of the committee are still finalizing their long-term plan for Gilas's improvement. The SBP is yet to announce the head coach for the national team and is currently in the process of selecting the final pool of players who will represent the country in the qualifiers.
In the previous Olympic qualifiers, Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) head coach Tab Baldwin led the national team. Under his guidance, a group of collegiate standouts nearly stunned basketball powerhouses Serbia and the Dominican Republic.
As the countdown to the Olympic qualifiers continues, Gilas Pilipinas is gearing up for a grueling yet exhilarating journey. With unwavering determination and a collective will to succeed, the team is poised to make a strong case for their place in the Paris Olympics and bring pride to the nation.
