A devastating bus accident occurred outside Bangkok, Thailand, resulting in the tragic deaths of 20 children and three teachers. The bus, carrying school pupils on a return trip from a northern excursion, crashed and caught fire under an overpass.
Witnesses reported that the bus collided with a concrete barrier after a tire blowout. The vehicle was quickly engulfed in flames, trapping many passengers inside. Despite the efforts of some survivors to escape, the intense fire made it impossible for many to flee.
The driver, who initially attempted to extinguish the fire but later fled the scene, was apprehended by police 100 kilometers north of Bangkok. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
While 19 children and three teachers survived the crash, 16 of the survivors required hospital treatment for their injuries. Transport Minister Suriyahe Juangroongruangkit criticized the use of compressed natural gas as fuel for the bus, calling it "extremely risky."
The recovery efforts were hampered by the severe burns sustained by the victims, making identification difficult. Forensic investigators confirmed the deaths of 23 people, including 11 males, seven females, and five unidentified individuals. The ages of the children on board remain uncertain, although the school caters to pupils aged 3 to 15.
Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, announced that a thorough investigation into the accident would be conducted, examining factors such as the driver's actions, the vehicle's condition, and any potential contributing factors.
