Philadelphia 76ers star forward Paul George suffered a hyperextension of his left knee during the second quarter of the team's 104-89 preseason victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night. The injury occurred while George was defending Hawks forward Jalen Johnson.
George was immediately forced to leave the game and did not return, finishing with eight points on 3-of-5 shooting in 12 minutes of action. Following the game, Sixers coach Nick Nurse expressed hope that the injury would not be serious, stating, "Hopefully it'll be OK so he's back with us right away."
Reports indicated that George was walking around and appeared to be "not too concerned" about the injury. He was scheduled to undergo further evaluation and treatment later that night.
George's injury is a significant setback for the Sixers, who acquired him this offseason in a high-profile free agency move. He signed a four-year, $212 million contract with the team after spending the past five seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Last season, George averaged 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals in 74 games for the Clippers. He was also named an All-Star for the ninth time in his career.
The Sixers now face uncertainty regarding George's availability for the upcoming regular season, which begins on October 23 against the Milwaukee Bucks.
