Vlogger and entrepreneur Rosmar Tan has found herself in hot water after making a seemingly insensitive post on social media amid the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Kristine in parts of the Philippines.
In a now-deleted Facebook post, Tan expressed her concern for the victims of the storm, particularly the elderly. However, her choice of words struck a nerve with many netizens.
She wrote, "It’s hard to think that while we are lying in a soft bed, just waking up with an air conditioner, there are many children and adults who don’t know how to save themselves in Bicol because of the flood and typhoon."
While some appreciated her acknowledgment of the situation, many others were quick to criticize her for what they perceived as bragging about her privilege. Several social media users pointed out that her post seemed more like a flex than a genuine expression of concern.
One commenter wrote, "You're bragging again. Use your platform to help, not to brag or to be jealous." Another added, "You don't have to include when you are lying in a soft bed and in an air conditioner because no one cares. You are so insensitive and self-righteous."
Facing widespread criticism, Tan issued an apology, stating that she had no intention of being insensitive and was merely worried about the elderly in the affected areas. Despite her apology, many netizens remained unconvinced.
The incident has sparked a wider conversation about the responsibility of public figures, especially those with large followings, to use their platforms thoughtfully and empathetically, particularly during times of crisis.
