Squid Game Actor Park Sung Hoon Faces Criticism for Sharing Explicit Parody Amid National Mourning

Park Sung Hoon, known for his role as a transgender character in the second season of Netflix's hit series Squid Game, is facing backlash for briefly sharing an explicit parody of the show on his Instagram story.

The actor, currently starring in Queen of Tears, shared a cover image of what appeared to be a Japanese adult video mimicking Squid Game. Despite quickly deleting the post, it had already been seen by many of his followers, sparking criticism and outrage.

This incident is particularly insensitive as South Korea is currently observing a seven-day national mourning period following the tragic Jeju Air crash that claimed the lives of 179 people.

Netizens were quick to express their disapproval, with many questioning the actor's judgment and the explanation provided by his agency. Comments like, "[I don't know] how this is supposed to help 'cause this just confirms he had the image saved in his phone lol," and "Do they think we are dumb? Posting on [Instagram] is a step-wise process," highlight the skepticism surrounding the incident.

Sung Hoon's agency, BH Entertainment, released a statement attributing the post to an accidental upload. They claimed the actor received the image in a direct message and mistakenly shared it due to a wrong button press. The agency emphasized Sung Hoon's remorse and his commitment to preventing such incidents in the future.

This controversy comes after Sung Hoon's portrayal of Hyun-Ju (Player 120) in Squid Game season 2, a transgender woman who joins the deadly games to fund her gender-affirming surgery. The actor has also appeared in other popular dramas like Roots of the Throne, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, and The Glory.

The incident has sparked debate about online conduct, particularly for public figures, and the responsibility that comes with social media influence, especially during times of national mourning.
