- PBA executive's involvement in on-court melee sparks controversy.
NorthPort governor and PBA executive Erick Arejola is under fire for his involvement in a chaotic on-court brawl during a high school basketball game last Sunday. The incident, captured on video, took place in the final minutes of a tense semifinal match between De La Salle Zobel (DLSZ) and Arandia College in the NBTC local qualifying tournament for Las Piñas.
With DLSZ comfortably ahead 89-78 and only 1:01 left on the clock, a foul called against DLSZ's Kieffer Alas ignited the melee. Some Arandia players retaliated with physical and verbal aggression, targeting DLSZ players and parents seated courtside. This sparked a free-for-all involving players, parents, and spectators.
Arejola, whose son Champ plays for DLSZ, was among the parents present. Sources close to Arejola claim he stepped in only after his son was punched amidst the chaos. Champ's mother and sister were also reportedly on the court at the time.
The game was immediately stopped, and DLSZ was awarded the victory. However, league organizers are still deliberating on appropriate penalties for those involved in the brawl. The upcoming finals match between DLSZ and AMA Basic Education of Las Piñas is expected to be held without spectators due to the incident.
Arandia College players have filed a police report regarding the altercation. As of now, Arejola has not released a statement about his involvement.
The NBTC has publicly condemned the violence and entrusted the local organizers, the LPM basketball league, with the responsibility of disciplining the players. This unfortunate event underscores the importance of sportsmanship and restraint, even in highly competitive environments.
