Negros Occidental is under State of Calamity due to El Nino

Bacolod - Negros Occidental is under state of calamity due to El Nino, the Province Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) declared on Thursday. The damage according to report has reached to more than P400 million as of April 20.

The affected areas are the towns of Hinobaan, Pontevedra, Hinigaran, and Sipalay who already declared the state of calamity after the prolonged shortage of water supply in farms due to water shortage.

According to Provincial Disaster Management Program Division as of Wednesday, damage and loses to rice, corn,high-value commercial crops(HVCC), and fish ponds have been reached at P221.88 million.

Damaged to sugarcane industries have also reached to P178.5 million and around P3.16 million from the livestock and poultry.Based on the report, around 7,080 farmers, 44 fisherfolks, and 7909 sugar planters in 136 barangays of 21 local government units in five districts of Negros Occidental.
