PAGASA Releases List of Tropical Cyclone Names for 2025

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has announced the roster of names for tropical cyclones that may enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in 2025.  Following a four-set naming convention that rotates annually, the agency has prepared a list of 25 names, starting with "Auring" and ending with "Zoraida."

This year's list features familiar names like "Kiko," "Mirasol," and "Wilma," which have been used in previous cycles.  Should the number of tropical cyclones exceed 25, PAGASA will utilize an auxiliary list of 10 names, beginning with "Alamid" and concluding with "Jerome."

Here's the complete list of names for 2025:

PAGASA uses localized names to make weather bulletins more relatable and easier for Filipinos to understand. This practice aids in effective information dissemination and promotes public awareness and preparedness for impending tropical cyclones.

The agency emphasizes that each set of names is reused every four years. However, names associated with particularly destructive typhoons that caused significant damage and casualties are retired and replaced.

While PAGASA handles the naming of tropical cyclones within PAR, the international names used in the western North Pacific and South China Sea are provided by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center Tokyo-Typhoon Center, operated by the Japan Meteorological Agency. These names are contributed by various countries in the region, including the Philippines.
