Pasig River among International Riverprize finalists for 2017

Manila, Philippines - The Pasig River has been selected by the International River Foundation (IRF) as a finalist in the 2017 Thies International Riverprize which recognizes and rewards organizations in countries with best river restoration and management programs.


According to Dennison "this year, we received a record number of 31 submissions, ang the overall quality of the submissions has been higher than ever." One of the Philippine historic river will be competing against restoration efforts in river of Scotland, Nushagak, Kvichak rivers, San Antonio river in Texas and many more.

 The finalist represents a stellar selection of river management efforts from around the world. These different river around the globe are united by a common theme "Excellent in river management," said Dennison. 

The IRF, comprised of river management experts and professionals from around the world, has taken notice and consideration on the rehabilitation efforts of the PRRC to bring back the Pasig river into its historically-pristine condition.

Compared to the 1990's when it was declared biologicaally dead, the Pasig River's condition now has significantly improved. Although the Pasig river is yet to achieve the water qualty that it desires, some areas along the historic river have already shown signs of aquatic life and it has become conducive for transport, recreation and tourism.



PRRC also revealed plans to put up a multi-modal transport system there. This project includes the resumption of the Pasig River Ferry Service and construction of an elevated railway system on th riverbanks.

The multi-modal transportation system will connect Manila Bay and Laguna de Bay and is expected to ease traffic congestion in EDSA by 30%.

President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered Senator Manny Pacquiao, chairman of the Senate committee o public works, to head the oversight of th Pasig River Development.
