Mobile phone catches fire causing mid-air panic to passengers of Jet Airways flight

A smoke from a passenger's phone causes panic to Delhi-Indore Jet Airways flight on Friday, atleast 120 people onboard who eventually landed safely.


Hindustantimes reported that the phone was belonged to the Delhi residents Arpita Dhal who was kept in her bag under the seat. About 15-minutes into the flight, she noticed smoke from the bag and called the crew for help.

Passenger named Arpita's husband, Atul Dhall narrated he heard a thud from under his wife's seat and noticed smoke starting to emit from her bag which carries three mobile phone. The couple identified the mobile phone that caught on fire as a Samsung J7.

A Jet Airways spokesperson confirmed the incident but said it was resolved “as per guidelines”.

“It was observed on board Jet Airways’ flight 9W 791 Delhi-Indore that smoke was emitting from a guest hand bag. Jet Airways crew immediately took charge of the situation, as also all necessary steps as precautionary measure, and as per the prescribed guidelines,” the spokesperson said.

“We are in touch with relevant authorities for more information. At Samsung, customer safety is top priority,” a Samsung India spokesperson said.

Dhal’s husband, Atul, said the crew had to put the phone in a tray of water to put out the fire. Their other phones were also put in it as a precaution.
