Guimbal Mayor, lawmaker to face charges after beating a police officer

President Rodrigo Duterte ordered Interior Secretary Eduardo Año to file direct assault charges against Iloilo Mayor Garin and his son Iloilo First District Representative Richard Garin.

"I will ask General Año to take a look, investigate. I am not urging him. I am ordering him to file a case against the two," Duterte said.

According to GMA report, Guimbal town Mayor Oscar Garin and his son Iloilo First District Representative Richard Garin disarmed , handcuffed, slapped, and spat on PO3 Federico Macaya on Wednesday whom they invited for a certain case.

Garins allegedly got upset to the result of the investigation in a mauling incident happened on December 22, were Macaya was the investigation officer.

Congressman Garin has apologized for the incident and said that his action was directed not at the Philippine National Police (PNP) but a "mere display of extreme frustration" over a single police officer.

In a separate report from GMA news, Año said that there is a clear ground for the withdrawal of authority from Garins.

"What the congressman and the mayor did was abuse of authority and display of arrogance; a conduct unbecoming of men in authority and well-deserving of punishment," He said in a media report.

"I will not tolerate this kind of behavior and will order the removal of Mayor Garin's deputation authority over the Guimbal police once the investigation results are out," Año added.
