Palawan town mayor proclaimed after winning a coin toss

Palawan, Philippines -  A mayoral race in Araceli, Palawan got a tie in the number of votes during the 2019 Philippine midterm elections. And they need to settle the dispute. Officials say a coin toss is acceptable procedure although under the Omnibus Election code specify the drawing of lots.



The two mayoral candidates has to settle via coin toss between rivals Sue Cudilla of Partido Pagbabago ng Palawan and Noel Beronio of PDP-Laban. 

The coin toss was set on Friday afternoon, May 17, 2019. Sue Cudilla, the former mayor is now the mayor of Araceli in western Palawan province  after winning the best-of-three coin flip.

Both Cudilla and her rival incumbent Noel Beronio received 3,495 votes .

Under the law, "local board of canvassers should proclaim as selected the candidates who may be favored by luck." 

Same case happened during the 2016 election when Joni Villanueva became the mayor of Bocaue in Bilacan via coin toss against her rival Jim Valerio.
