EJ Obiena, the first Philippine athlete to qualify for 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Philippines' Pole vaulter Ernest John EJ Obiena became the first Filipino to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic after clearing 5.81 meters qualifying standard in an athletics meet in Italy.

The 6"1' Obiena successfully registered the 5.81 meters on his third and last attempt defeating his five opponents in quest for gold.

EJ is the son of former pole vault Emerson Obiena who tried the 5.9 meters but failed. He broke his national record of 5.76 meters which he set during the 2019 Summer Universaide held also in Italy.
