Jake Zyrus: "Nagsi-CR ako sa kung saan ako dapat mag-CR"

The trans man Jake Zyrus made his first straightforward statement about the controversial restroom for the LGBTQ community. During the launching of his album on Wednesday he was asked about his view whether trans people should be allowed to use restrooms that align with their gender identities.

He said, “I used to think that way, pipilitin ko 'yung sarili ko to go to the male's restroom but the more that I grow older, the more I realized na not everyone thinks the same, not everyone believes in the beliefs that you believe so nagsi-CR ako sa kung saan ako dapat mag-CR, so kung ano po ‘yung naiisip niyo, doon ako nagsi-CR. I simply follow the law, I respect the law.”

“If I go to a women's restroom and they feel awkward, it is not my fault anymore because I am just following the law because it's what they said, right? Biologically, I am a woman, so I follow it. Because I don't need everyone else's validation of who I am."

The issue has became a national debate among people in different walks of life after Gretchen Diez, a trans woman who said she feels discriminated from using a female restroom of a Quezon City mall.

The incident sparked a fresh pushed for passing of a bill that would protect members of the LGBTQ+ community rights.

"This is not about the CR anymore, this is about how we are going to treat each other and how we are going to understand each other. This is not just about understanding me, understanding the LGBT community - this is both ways,"  He explained.

Zyrus on his stance on the third restroom or the gender-neutral toilet, said he would only approve of it if majority of Filipino accept it.

"There are so many problems that we should face a lot more than this. I am more concerned of that. Pabor ako kung mababasa ko sa comments na okay na ang lahat," he said.
