Grade 10 Filipino student invented a robot that can pick and sort garbage

Recycling? What can and can't be recycled is often confusing. This 16-year-old high school student from Abra Meljon Reyes Viste had developed a robot that can pick and sort garbage. Since he was a child, Meljon started to show interest in toys such as robots and Lego bricks, a talent that he developed for his passion to help the environment even without a formal robotics educational background.

As a student at Abra High School, they are required to do research and propose a solutions to problems in the province.

He got more curious about robot when he saw a local robotics competition and he think about the benefits a robot can give to the environment. Then he developed a prototype robot that could collect garbage and segregate it at the same time.

"May limit po kasi, magko-collect at magse-segregate. 'Yun po 'yung prototype ko, magko-collect ng plastic and metal can, then after that, kaya niyang i-segregate (my plan was to make a robot that would pick up garbage and segregate the metal from the plastic. But the actual robot showed limitations compared to the prototype),” He said.

His prototype robot is made of scrap materials and recycled Lego parts while his actual robot are made out of old electric wheelchair he found in a junk shop. The actual robot stands four feet, he used for the competition in the national event after it passed the three screenings.

His creation was even noticed by the big local companies who offered to buy it. But he refused since he's still young and he love what he's doing at the moment, He said. Meljon said that he would bring an improved version of his 'enviro robot' in an upcoming competition in Australia on the third week of October.

Last August, Meljon joined the sumobot, a 'Sumo wrestling robot' event held in Thailand, The World Robot Games Championship where he won third place. Sumobot is an event that showcased all the fighting robots in the world that could be able to punch an opponent.
