The chocolate brand, which began in 1954 was established by businessman Antonio Goquiolay in response to expensive imported brands has flourished in the 1980s. In the 1990s, the company continued to grow with their atleast 5000 strong employees but later filed for bankruptcy in 2001.

Serg's chocolate bars which had a recognizable pinstripe wrapper are now slowly raising back its name piece by piece despite of the growing competition.

Sergio's son-in-law, Randy Ong, who has left his job in the United States to come home is now rebuilding the brand as "He kept a Facebook page where he, one post at a time, fed on nostalgia and people's penchant for comeback and revivals," according to a report.

“There will always be a market for anybody, anything, any product… It’s the same thing with Serg’s. There are people who are very nostalgic, very patriotic for local brands,” said Ong in the Inquirer.net report.
