Pope Francis' names Cardinal Tagle to top Vatican post

Philippines' Cardinal Luis Tagle has been appointed by Pope Francis to lead the Vatican post responsible for evangelization of the People. 

The 62-year-old Tagle has been long observe as having the qualifications of "papabile," or have the potential to be elected pope someday by their fellow cardinals. Cardinal Tagle is set to replace Cardinal Fernando Filoni, who led the Vatican office in overseeing the church vast mission since 2011.

While Tagle was expected to be installed at his new post in the beginning of 2020, Filoni would become grand master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. Filoni succeeds U.S. Cardinal Edwin F. O'Brien, 80.

According to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippine (CBCP) reposrt said the nomination of Tagle to the Vatican post marks the return of an Asian cardinal in the important department after Cardinal Ivan Dias served from 2006-2011.

"Francis is really beginning to put together a team of his own inside the Curia," said Marco Politi, a respected Italian journalist who is author of nearly a dozen books on the Vatican.

"Many of Francis' supporters have criticized him behind the scenes for not having put in place a spoils system at the Vatican and for not putting people dedicated to his reform agenda in key posts," said Politi, a former long-time Vatican correspondent for the daily newspaper La Repubblica.

"Future appointments to the posts now occupied by Cardinals Sarah and Ouellet will permit Francis to create a more uniform leadership at the Vatican's highest levels," his statement as quoted at ncronline.org.

The Vatican also announced that Pope Francis will celebrate his first Simbang Gabi for the Filipino Catholics in Rome.
