Deadly China coronavirus detected first case in Japan

Japan's health authorities confirmed first case of deadly new China coronavirus that has been tested positive to a man who returned to Japan that visited central China where the outbreak exists, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

The man, in his 30s, lives in the coastal Kanagawa Prefecture just south of Tokyo. He developed a high fever on January 3 while in Wuhan, and returned three days later to Japan, where he was tested positive for the virus, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

The pneumonia caused by the virus, which the World Health Organization recognized Tuesday as a novel coronavirus, has infected 41 people in Wuhan, with preliminary evidence suggesting the outbreak was associated with exposure in a seafood market.

The confirmation comes just days after Thai authorities said a Chinese tourist arriving from Wuhan had been quarantined with the new virus, the first time it had been detected outside China.
