Dog tested positive of coronavirus sparked fears that disease might spread with other pets

Hong Kong authorities has reportedly quarantined a dog as first case anywhere in the world,  diagnosed positive of the disease. However, virus in the animals is a "weak" strain.

"Nasal and oral cavity samples tested weak positive for COVID-19," authorities said.

They said that the dog is now under quarantine for 14 days at the Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department (AFCD), and being monitored closely.

Experts have found the dog's rectal, nasal, and oral samples to be positive of a "weak" strain. It is unclear whether the dog had actually contracted the virus or tested positive due to environmental contamination of the dog's mouth and nose.

"At present, the AFCD doest not have evidence that pet animals can be infected with COVID-19 virus or can be source of infection to people," the statement read.

The World Health Organization have already said that pets cannot carry the coronavirus or even transmit human to pets or vice versa.
