Woman plays the violin while in the middle of brain surgery

To "ensure areas of the patient's brain responsible for delicate hand movement and coordination" will not be affected after a crucial surgery, doctors are letting their patient to play violin while undergoing surgery, the hospital statement said.

Doctors at King's College Hospital in London has successfully removed tumor on 53-year-old Dagamar Turner, a violinist who learned of her tumor after a seizure at a symphony.

Video of the surgery procedure shows Turner playing with her eyes closed, surrounded by doctors. Turner was worried about losing her skills on playing violin if the doctors will cut the bad tissue.

“This was the first time I’ve had a patient play an instrument,” said Prof. Keyoumars Ashkan, the consulting neurosurgeon who came up with the idea.

“We managed to remove over 90 per cent of the tumour, including all the areas suspicious of aggressive activity, while retaining full function in her left hand,” he told Reuters.

Turner, a mother of 13-year-old son, was well enough to return home three days after the procedure.
