Ifugao farmers are throwing away fresh veggies due to lack of buyers amid COVID-19 pandemic

The bad effect of coronavirus has been getting wider. Some farmers from Cordillera has been throwing tons of truckloads of their agricultural products due to COVID-19 quarantine.

Ifugao farmer Jaren Lamgi posted pictures of the wasted harvest on his Facebook account, with the caption. "Anyangay agniti malaku... eb andi lay ilakud bagas," which can be translated to "Walang magagawa at hindi nabenta... wala na kaming pambili ng bigas."

The price of vegetables in Cordillera have been continues to drop, according to Benguet Farmers Marketing Cooperative head Agot Balanoy in a report by the Philippine News Agency. "the last month of 2019 and the first two months of 2020 have been difficult for the vegetable industry."

Due to limited movement of consumers, more farmer's produced vegetables have left excess. Adding to this hardships are due to the cancellation of Baguio City's festivals - where restaurants and resorts limit their orders due to the low demand for food establishments.
