Ten newborns tests positive for COVID-19 at Romanian hospital

Ten newborn babies in Western Romania has been tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19) at the Odobescu Maternity Hospital of the Municipal Hospital of Timisoara. Health authorities are investigating the incident after it was found out that "the mothers tested negative, but the babies are tested positive".

A total of 49 mothers and their children were taken samples on April 1, and the laboratory tests result was carried out on April 5 and 6. Authorities are looking into the possibilities that the infants has contracted the virus from medical staff. The babies have no symptoms, but all of them together with their mothers have gone into self-isolation at home.

"For the past two days I have felt like I am living in a horror film," one of the mothers told the local pressalert.ro website.

"The staff were not wearing masks," she said, adding that the mothers had heard on Wednesday through unofficial channels that there was a case of coronavirus in the hospital.

"On Thursday the hospital was disinfected with us inside," she said.

There are more than 4,400 confirmed cases in Romania and 180 people have already died. Around 700 of those infected are health workers.
