The world's most expensive tree in the Philippines cost PHP750,000 per kilogram

Lapnisan or agarwood is the world's most expensive tree that has constantly poached in the Philippines due to its high value and demand. Known as the woods of the Gods, this tree is one of the rarest trees in the world found in the deepest parts of the jungles of Southeast Asia.

In the Philippines, lapnisan could only found in the center of the thickest jungles of Mindanao and Visayas. The tree is a non-timber type of wood but the treasure is in the highly-coveted resin of the said tree.

But for this tree to produce any agarwood, it must first become infected with mold that is worth more than its weight in gold. Perfumers and incense makers are willing to pay millions of dollars for a liter of this said substance with a global value of $8 billion. In the country, the tree is traded at P750,000 per kilogram in the Philippines.

Depending on the quality of the raw materials, agarwood emits different scents such as soft florals, accents of musk, vanilla, and bright fruits. These scents are often used and favored by perfumers, incense makers, and candlemakers.

Lapnisan also takes 20 years to mature before you can harvest its wood because it only grows in areas with a high elevation and cool climate. Another reason why this said tree is very rare is due to its growth which only goes from 10 to 12 feet only and is difficult to cultivate.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) earlier deemed lapnisan as an endangered species and under the protection of the government. It also said it is illegal to buy, sell, collect, or transport any part of the said tree.

Agarwood is a fragrant dark resinous wood and is used as incense, perfume ingredient, and also in small carvings.
