Disney to lay off 28,000 jobs due to coronavirus

Walt Disney announced that they will cut roughly 28,000 employees, mostly in their U.S. based theme parks due to the limited visitors brought by coronavirus scare.

Around two-thirds of the laid-off employees will be part-time workers, the company said in a statement.

"We have made the very difficult decision to begin the process of reducing our workforce at our Parks, Experiences and Products segment at all levels," Josh D'Amaro, chairman of the parks unit, said in a statement.

D'Amarco called the move "heartbreaking," he said the management had tried to avoid layoffs by cutting expenses. The company had continued to pay the workers health benefits since April.

Except for Disneyland in California, all of the company's parks have now reopened with limited visitors to allow social distancing. Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Paris are not affected by the announcement.

Hong Kong Disney reopened last week after shutting down for a second time in July due to the health pandemic.
