This Ivatan sweet potato beer exist in Batanes

Thanks for the best sweet potato beers named after the Ivatan of Batanes, known as the honest and friendly people in the northernmost province in the Philippines.

From savory side dishes to sugary desserts, this sweet potato also makes a fine complement for adventurous brewers from the research and development department of Batanes State College, Dr. Alfonso Simon said as quoted in a report.

"The fact that the Ivatan Beer is made from the locally grown wakay or sweet potato, which is abundant in the province of Batanes, the product becomes even more interesting and appealing to the locals of Batanes," Dr. Simon told PNA.

The Cagayan Valley office of the Department of Science and Technology provided funds amounting to P400,000 to the BSC to develop the beer in 2018. Then the Ivatan Beer was introduced a year later during the Science and Technology Caravan in Batanes. The product won third place in the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit the same year.

Locally known as wakay, this sweet potato is one of Batanes most common root crops along with yam and taro.

Simon and Dinnes Lim of Tawsen Agri-Ventures signed the technology licensing agreement.

A college instructor turned entrepreneur, Lim, said that Ivatan Beer's commercialization will immensely help boost Batanes tourism industry.
