Scientists want to send more than 6 million sperm samples to the moon for safekeeping

Scientists are looking into consideration its plan to send 6.7 million sperm samples into the moon by shooting the sperm and ova samples through multiple payloads.

The samples would then be stored in a vault or they called it "ark" beneath the surface of the moon, in a "lunar pit," where they could be kept secure.

As our planet is vulnerable to natural disasters, drought, asteroids and the potential for nuclear war — to name a few troubles — scientists say that humans must set their sights on space travel to preserve life as we know it.

According to the team of six researchers from the University of Arizona who presented their study at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Aerospace Conference, their proposal would protect mankind from extinction.

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is pictured in the Arctic Circle.

"We can still save them until the tech advances to then reintroduce these species — in other words, save them for another day," according to Thanga’s presentation.

The pits also are the perfect size for cell storage, according to Thanga. They go down 80 to 100 meters underground and “provide readymade shelter from the surface of the moon,” which endures “major temperature swings,” as well as threats from meteorites and radiation.

Thanga has cited the eruption of Indonesia's Mount Toba 75,000 years ago as a reason for worry, revealing it "caused a 1,000-year cooling period and, accordingt to some, alligns with an estimated drop in human diversity."

While this proposal seem like straight of science fiction, the "ark" concept was already being employed at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault - housing plant seeds that is located in Norwegian island of Spitsbergen in the Arctic Circle.

According to their study, it would take 250 rocket launches needed to transport 50 samples of each species (6.7 million target).
