Man who died from accident in Nueva Vizcaya wrapped like 'mummy' with packing tape by hospital

A grieving family of a man who died in an accident in Neuva Vizcaya has left shocked when they saw the victim dead body was covered with a packing tape in the hospital.

In a report by GMA News on Tuesday, the victim who was identified as Merwin Fabrigas was rushed to Region II Trauma and Medical Center after he figured in an accident on April 30 in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya but died a day after.

According to the mother, Mitchilou Fabrigas Sapipi, her son was taken and set to the hospital's ward for COVID patients. She alleged that the hospital has taken off his life support while he was recovering.

"Masakit sa kalooban. Naghahagulgol na lang ako ng iyak doon. Ayaw ko sanang mangyari, nagawa niyong manok ang anak ko. Pero wala silang pakialam imbis na 'yong anak ko sana sila na mag-asikaso... ganoon pa ang ginawa nila," Mitchilou Fabrigas Sapipi said.

"It's very painful. I cried there," she said. "You treat him like a chicken. But they don't care (referring to the hospital)."

Her wish was to see her son for the last time, "Hiling ko sana sa nurse at doktor na bigyan pa nila ng chance at nakita ko naman pong humihinga pa ang anak ko."

However, the hospital has turned down the allegations, revealing that the patient was declared dead before the life support was removed.

"The patient was declared dead doon na tinanggal ang life support para yung machine magamit ng ibang pasyente. So hindi namin tinanggal noong buhay siya," Dr. Napoleon Obaña told GMA News.

She explained that they also suspected Fabrigas as COVID patient since he was came from the place where COVID cases is high.

"May upsurge ng [COVID-19] cases in Quirino. So we want to safeguard also ang mga taga-Vizcaya. We have to treat it as parang COVID na rin dahil baka mag-infect eh. Baka magkalat ang infection," the doctor added.

The hospital added that wrapping of dead body to suspected COVID positive patient is part of the protocol.

Fabrigas has been tested negative as per the result of COVID-19 test on May 2.
