CANADIAN PROVINCE SASKATCHEWAN PLANS TO HIRE MORE FILIPINOS TO FILL A HEALTHCARE WORKER SHORTAGE

 At least 150 permanent, full-time Filipino staff are needed in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan  to fill in healthcare labour shortage in 2022. 




According to the Saskatoon Star Phoenix, Saskatchewan Health Authority aims to hire 150 health care professionals from the Philippines. The effort was also supported by the healthcare unions, but noted foreign workers must be supported.




"We could not be without our Filipino nurses," Saskatchewan Union of Nurses President Tracy Zambory said. "They are a gigantic asset and we could not run without them. We just have to make sure that we are taking lessons from the past."




According to the 2016 statistics, it is estimated that nearly a quarter of nurses aides, orderlies and similar professionals in province were immigrants. The report added that nearly 30% of such professionals across Canada were Filipino and majority of it are women.



An official expressed surprised that only 150 were needed to fill the gap, which in fact more than 1000 job vacancies in the province are needed.



Most of the Filipino population in the country are concentrated in four Canadian provinces: Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, and Manitoba.
