BATANES GOV SEEK FOR BUYERS OF THEIR EXCESS GARLIC AT P100/KG AMID HIGH PRICE

Batanes Gov. Marilou Cayco on Tuesday appealed to buyers after the province produced an oversupply of 25 tons of garlic.

"Mayroon po kaming 25 tons dito na bawang. Sabi kasi sa news, P400/kilo na ang bawang dyan (sa Maynila). Kami may 25 tons na bawang eh sobra-sobra sa amin ito ngayon. P100/kilo ang benta namin dito sa Batanes... Baka may gustong bumili... kaysa mabulok lang ito," Batanes Gov. Marilou Cayco said in an interview.

"Naawa ako dun sa mga farmer at baka ma-discourage po silang magtanim kung hindi mabili ang kanilang produkto," she added in separate interview.

According to the Bureau of Plant Industry in late August, the country has projected demand of 73,000 metric tons of garlic in the second half of the year, however local supply can only support around 37,000 metric tons.

"We are not sufficient at all when it comes to garlic. We are dependent on importation... insufficiency, admittedly, is a problem we have been facing and improvement in production yield and quality of our garlic is something we have to work on," DA Spokesperson Kristine Evangelista said during a House panel briefing.

However, DA Senior Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban in a radio interview said oversupply of garlic and cabbage was caused by unplanned planting without taking consideration if farmers  have market for their produce.

"They plant crops but they don't think about the market for their harvests," said Panganiban for his reaction over reports of oversupply of garlic and cabbage in Batanes and Benguet, respectively.
