Airline Passenger Hospitalized After Opening Emergency Exit and Climbing Onto Wing

A Southwest Airlines passenger was hospitalized on Sunday after opening the emergency exit of a plane and climbing onto the wing, according to officials. The incident occurred at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport while the plane was still at the gate and not moving.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said that the passenger was caught on the tarmac and taken to a local hospital for evaluation. The nature of the hospitalization was not disclosed.

The passenger’s motive for opening the emergency exit is unknown.

After a brief delay, the flight departed to Atlanta and continued on to its final destination of Baltimore.

Southwest Airlines said that it commends its flight and ground crews for their swift action and apologizes to its customers for their inconvenience.

The airline confirmed to authorities that there was an incident involving a passenger’s “unauthorized deplaning of the aircraft” but declined to comment further.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. No criminal charges have been filed.

In addition to the above, here are some other details about the incident:

  •     The passenger was a 38-year-old man from Atlanta.
  •     He did not have any weapons with him.
  •     He was not found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The incident is a reminder of the importance of following airline safety procedures. Emergency exits are only to be used in an emergency, and opening them without authorization can put yourself and others at risk.
