DOH on alert for possible new pathogens as flu-like cases increase

Manila, Philippines: The Department of Health (DOH) is actively monitoring a nationwide surge in influenza-like illness (ILI) cases, raising concerns about the potential emergence of new pathogens. Health officials are urging vigilance and emphasizing preventive measures.

Heightened Surveillance and Sample Collection:

According to Health Undersecretary Eric Tayag, DOH facilities are diligently collecting samples from patients with flu-like symptoms to identify the specific virus causing the illness. This proactive approach aims to detect any potential new pathogens at the earliest stages.

Confirmed Cases and Increased Vaccination:

While several cases have been confirmed as COVID, influenza A, or influenza B, the DOH remains watchful for new diseases. Since the beginning of the year, a significant increase in ILI cases has been observed, with a substantial portion affecting children. To address this, the DOH is ramping up vaccination efforts against influenza and pneumonia.

Concerns Over Global Rise in Respiratory Infections:

The DOH is also monitoring the situation in other countries, particularly the rise in respiratory infections in China, reported by the World Health Organization as "undiagnosed pneumonia."

Dr. Rontgene Solante, an infectious disease specialist, encourages the public to remain vigilant and maintain preventive measures against ILI. He emphasizes that the rise in respiratory diseases is not limited to China and calls for continued awareness and proactive measures to protect health.
