6.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off the Southern Philippines and a Tsunami Warning Is Issued

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 struck off the coast of the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Saturday night, (Dec. 2, 2023) prompting a tsunami warning.

The quake struck at 10:37 p.m. at a depth of 32 kilometers (20 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
 
 

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center Warns of Potential Waves
 

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that based on the magnitude and location of the earthquake, tsunami waves were expected to hit the southern Philippines and parts of Indonesia, Palau, and Malaysia.
 

 


The warning center said that tsunami waves could reach up to 10 meters (33 feet) in height in some areas.
 

Officials Urge Residents to Move to Higher Ground
 


Officials in the Philippines and other affected countries urged residents to move to higher ground or inland as a precaution.
 

The tsunami warning was in effect for several hours, but it was eventually lifted on Sunday morning.
 
 
 People rush out of a hospital, mall, restaurants, and other buildings in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte during a magnitude 6.9 earthquake.
 
 


Phivolcs located the epicenter east of Hinatuan City, Surigao del Sur at 10:37 p.m.
It was felt at Intensity V (Strong) in Bislig City and in Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte.
 

 


No Major Damage or Casualties Reported as of the posting time.
 

There were no reports of major damage or casualties from the tsunami. However, the earthquake did cause some damage to buildings and infrastructure in Mindanao.
