"Remembering Kokoi Baldo: The Reggae Maestro's Tragic Finale on the Road"

 He was known to many as "Bob Marley of the Philippines," Kokoi Baldo, a finalist in The Voice Season 2, tragically lost his life in a vehicular accident on December 8.

 

Hailing from Negros Oriental, Philippines, Kokoi Baldo, born Rodel Baldo on September 22, 1989, captivated global audiences with his exceptional musical talent and charismatic stage presence. Despite not winning The Voice, his reggae-style performance during the Filipino edition left an enduring impression, earning him a devoted fan base.



Kokoi, known for fusing reggae with the indigenous melodies of the Philippines, created a distinctive sound that resonated across diverse audiences. His ability to convey deep emotions through vocals and skilled guitar playing solidified his status as a musical icon.


Beyond talent competitions, Kokoi continued to captivate audiences with original compositions, collaborating with other artists. His lyrics often explored themes of love, unity, and resilience, connecting with listeners from various cultural backgrounds.

 

With a magnetic stage presence and authenticity in every note, Kokoi Baldo remained a significant figure in contemporary music. His dedication to his craft and genre-blending prowess positioned him as a unique artist, leaving his expanding fan base eagerly anticipating new chapters in his flourishing musical career.


Kokoi Baldo met a tragic end this morning in a motorcycle accident on Circumferential Road, Barangay Mandalagan, Bacolod City. According to a live video report by K5 News FM Bacolod 103.9, witnesses recounted that around 1 AM, Kokoi attempted to overtake a sugarcane-carrying truck, resulting in the unfortunate fall of his motorcycle.

 

Meanwhile, when you are heading to the south or vice versa, beautiful things start to happen.


This wall art by Khent Rio Durban of Hinobaan has become a one stop attraction to motorists. Durban, as one of the fan of Kokoi painted a mural in a concrete wall along the highway in Sipalay to immortalize the local legendary reggae singer.

Durban completed the mural in just 5-hours after learning that Baldo passed away.

Singer-actress Sarah Geronimo, a former judge of The Voice Philippines where Baldo joined the musical showdown wrote a post on social media:

 

"Maraming salamat at ibinahigi mo sa amin ang talento mo sa musika.. Marami po akong natutunan sa inyo lalo na ang prinsipyo nyo sa buhay. 


"Maraming salamat Sir Kokoi. May your soul rest in God's presence."
