"Teacher of the Year" Accused: Ma Faces 165 Years Over 18 Sex Crime Charges

Acclaimed Teacher Charged with Grooming and Sex Crimes Against Minors

A beloved San Diego County "Teacher of the Year" now faces a chilling reality: 18 felony sex crime charges for alleged misconduct involving two minors. Jacqueline Ma, 34, stands accused of grooming both boys, and entering a sexual relationship with one starting at the age of 12.

Ma's prestigious title, awarded in 2022, stands in stark contrast to the horrifying accusations. She's charged with lewd acts on a child, contacting a minor for sexual purposes, and even possessing child pornography. If convicted on all counts, she faces a potential sentence of 165 years to life.

The case began in March, triggered by a concerned mother. Detective Colleen Stanich, the lead investigator, testified that Ma allegedly directed one boy, dubbed John Doe 1, to delete incriminating messages or use "vanish mode" for temporary disappearance.

Further investigation revealed hidden messages on Ma's phone, detailing explicit acts and love confessions with John Doe 1. Stanich described Ma's anguish over the relationship's eventual expiration as the boy aged.

In July, another boy, John Doe 2, came forward. He described sexually charged texts with Ma starting at age 11, and a planned classroom encounter where Ma allegedly undressed and approached him. John Doe 2, fearing repercussions, fled the room.

Stanich testified that Ma allegedly showered both boys with gifts, solidifying her predatory behavior.

The prosecution sought to amend several charges, arguing Ma's authority as a teacher constituted "duress" on the victims. Defense attorney Mario Vela countered, claiming duress requires physical force or threats. Judge Maryann D'Addezio, however, sided with the prosecution, stating, "The evidence overwhelmingly shows the defendant exploited two children."

Ma remains jailed without bail, awaiting trial. The case casts a tragic shadow on the teaching profession, highlighting the importance of vigilance and swift action against predators masquerading as educators.
