Good News for Seniors and PWDs: Grocery Discount to Increase P500 per month

Starting March 2024, senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will enjoy a significant increase in their monthly grocery discount, going up to P500. This is in response to the request of Speaker Martin Romualdez, who advocated for an increase due to the rising cost of living.

Previously, seniors and PWDs received a weekly discount of P65, capped at a total purchase value of P1,500 for essential goods. The new system translates to a weekly discount of P125, making the monthly total P500.

The new discount applies to basic goods and prime commodities like rice, meat, vegetables, and milk. Manufactured goods like processed meat and sardines are also included, with premium brands excluded.Basic construction supplies like cement and electrical bulbs are covered. Premium items like cakes and pastries are not discounted. Seniors will receive an additional benefit under the Expanded Centenarian Act, providing a P10,000 cash gift every five years starting at age 80.

Please note:

Seniors still need to present valid identification to avail of the 20% discount on medicines. A purchase slip booklet is required to record over-the-counter medicine purchases. Doctor's prescriptions are no longer needed for over-the-counter medicines.
