Miss World 2024: Megan Young apologizes for touching Miss Botswana's hair

Miss World 2024: Cultural Misunderstanding Sparks Controversy

A seemingly friendly gesture during the Miss World 2024 pageant in Mumbai, India, has caused an unexpected stir.

Megan Young, Miss World 2013 from the Philippines, faced criticism after she adjusted the bangs of Miss Botswana, Lesego Chombo, during the Q&A portion. While Young intended to be helpful, the act was misconstrued by some in Botswana as culturally insensitive.

Some citizens from Botswana believe touching another person's hair carries superstitious meaning. They expressed outrage online, suggesting Young's actions may have affected Chombo's performance.

Young has since apologized publicly, acknowledging the cultural significance of the gesture and expressing regret for any discomfort caused.

"I wanted to offer a helping hand, but I failed to see the bigger picture," Young said in a Facebook post. "I deeply regret my actions and will strive to be more mindful and respectful in the future."

Interestingly, Miss Botswana, Lesego Chombo, defended both Young and the newly crowned Miss World, Krystyna Pyszková from the Czech Republic. Chombo urged her supporters to show kindness and avoid negativity.

"It really doesn't make me feel good when you bring other people down in my name," Chombo said in a social media message.
