Man dies after surgeon mistakenly removes his liver instead of spleen

A Florida surgeon is facing a lawsuit after mistakenly removing a patient's liver instead of the spleen, leading to the patient's death.

Beverly Bryan, the wife of 70-year-old patient Bill Bryan, is suing Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky and Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital for medical negligence. According to the lawsuit, Dr. Shaknovsky performed a hand-assisted laparoscopic splenectomy procedure on August 21, 2024, but inadvertently removed Mr. Bryan's liver instead. This caused severe blood loss and immediate death.

The Bryans were visiting their rental home in Okaloosa County when Bill started experiencing pain. Dr. Shaknovsky advised urgent surgery, which was performed at the hospital. After the procedure, Mrs. Bryan was informed that the "spleen" was unusually large and had migrated. However, it was later discovered that the spleen was still intact, and the liver had been mistakenly removed.

A spokesperson for Ascension stated that they are taking the allegations seriously and conducting a thorough investigation. The hospital emphasized its commitment to patient safety and expressed condolences to the family.

Zarzaur, Bryan's attorney, is pursuing both criminal and civil lawsuits against the surgeon and hospital. Mrs. Bryan described her husband's tragic death as a result of Dr. Shaknovsky's actions during the surgery.
