Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, the controversial leader of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC), surrendered to authorities on Sunday, citing a desire to prevent further "lawless violence" within the church's compound in Davao City.
According to Atty. Israelito Torreon, Quiboloy's chief legal counsel, the pastor's decision was an act of "ultimate sacrifice." Torreon stated that Quiboloy could no longer bear to witness the suffering of his followers, who had been subjected to hardships for many days.
Torreon explained that Quiboloy had been out of reach while awaiting the outcome of legal remedies pursued by his lawyers. However, the situation within the KOJC compound, following the execution of a police search warrant, prompted him to surrender. The compound had allegedly been transformed into a "police garrison" and "desecrated."
Despite having the right to await the legal process, Quiboloy chose to prioritize the well-being of his followers and surrender to the Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Earlier this year, Quiboloy accused the Marcos administration and the United States of conspiring to "eliminate" him. In addition to being wanted in the United States for sex trafficking, fraud, and other crimes, he also faces arrest warrants from the Senate for skipping its investigation into alleged abuses within the KOJC and from two courts for child and sexual abuse, as well as human trafficking charges.
Quiboloy is currently under the custody of the Philippine National Police and is being held at their custodial facility.
