Julie Anne San Jose, Agency, and Church Officials Issue Apologies Over The Viral Church Performance

The recent performance by Sparkle artist Julie Anne San Jose at the Nuestra Señora Del Pilar Shrine and Parish in Occidental Mindoro has sparked widespread controversy and debate among Filipino Catholics. Videos of San Jose performing secular songs like ABBA's "Dancing Queen" and Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory" inside the church have gone viral, leading to criticism of her attire and the setting of the performance.

Many netizens expressed their disapproval of the event, arguing that a church is a sacred space that should not be used for secular or non-religious purposes. They criticized San Jose's choice of attire, which they deemed inappropriate for a place of worship. Some even expressed concern about the potential negative impact on young people who might view the performance as a model of acceptable behavior in a religious setting.

In response to the criticism, Julie Anne San Jose issued a public apology on Facebook, stating that her intentions were to share joy and support the church through the benefit concert. She acknowledged that her actions had offended many people and expressed her regret for the incident.

Sparkle GMA Artist Center, San Jose's talent agency, also released a statement defending their artist and taking responsibility for her attendance at the event. They clarified that the agency had coordinated with the organizers and ensured that San Jose was aware of the expectations for the performance.

The Apostolic Vicariate of San Jose in Mindoro, which has jurisdiction over churches in the western part of Mindoro, also issued a statement addressing the controversy. They acknowledged that the scenes of San Jose's performance had offended many people and apologized for the mistakes made by the parish priest, Fr. Carlito Dimaano.

Bishop Pablito Tagura of the Apostolic Vicariate instructed Fr. Dimaano to issue a public apology and take steps to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. The bishop emphasized the importance of maintaining the sanctity of sacred places and ensuring that they are used appropriately.

The Code of Canon Law states that only activities that serve the exercise or promotion of worship, piety, or religion are permitted in a sacred place. While the ordinary can permit other uses in individual cases, these uses must not be contrary to the holiness of the place.

The controversy surrounding Julie Anne San Jose's performance has highlighted the importance of respecting the sacred nature of religious spaces and avoiding activities that could be perceived as disrespectful or offensive to people of faith.
